Lucy Cousins, Data design intern, Tech City UK

What made you interested in working in the tech sector?
I don’t know what started my interest, I think it was just seeing some friends work! But once I began to code I felt so empowered. I could create anything I wanted and felt like I was accomplishing something great, this is what kept my interest.

What was your experience of CodeFirst:Girls? What was the most important thing you learnt?
I think the most important thing I learnt was that I could do it, and that there were resources available to help me. The instructors on the course really made sure we were aware of all the support out there, including online coding courses and meetup groups around the country. I think that the course was what really pushed me to pursue a career in tech.

What do you most enjoy about your current role/using the skills you have?
The thing I most enjoy is the feeling of accomplishing something! The results of programming are so tangible, you can really see your progress, and even though it’s frustrating at times… a lot of the time… it’s really exciting to watch your projects (and yourself) grow and develop.

What advice would you give to other young women who are considering a career in tech?
Do it! I didn’t think it would be for me but I was so wrong. I think quite often we are made to think that tech is just a bunch of guys who have been coding their whole lives and anyone else would be at a major disadvantage, but that’s just not the case anymore. There are so many opportunities out there to learn, and it has become so general that you can pick elements that you enjoy and really focus on them. I’d tell everyone to just go for it and dive into the world of tech, you won’t regret it.
